This Sunday afternoon, May 15th, I will be sharing the story and art of the Daily Zoo at the Vroman's Bookstore Hastings Ranch location. The fun starts at 3PM and will be followed by a book signing. If you're coming and planning on having a book signed, start thinking about what animal you'd like me to sketch in your copy!

Please note that this event is at the Hastings Ranch location, not the main Vroman's on Colorado Blvd.
Daily Zoo fan Andrea ordered a book last fall and requested that I sketch a ferret for her, since she had one as a pet. I recently received this photo along with a note that said her four-legged companion, Amelie, approved of the drawing. So there you have it: The Daily Zoo, now ferret approved!
When I sign a book for someone I always offer to draw a quick sketch of an animal of their choice. Sometimes the customer will have a very specific request and sometimes they will leave it up to me. Here are three of the more unusual requests I've had in the past several weeks. My thanks to Russ, Patrick, and Justin for challenging me with their requests.
Here we have:
• "A bird who is VERY healthy."
• "A mommy and daddy bird pushing three baby birds out of the nest."
• "A Scottish cow (or "coo" as they say) with creative block." This one actually gave me a bit of creative block for a moment.
I've been keeping busy lately with filling orders for my latest book, signing and sketching in copies of The Daily Zoo Vol. 3: Healing Together. It's always fun to see what animals people request. Sometimes the requests are very specific, sometimes they leave it up to "artist's choice."
With previous books, I have almost always signed with a felt tip pen. The combination of the paper's slick surface, the small area to sketch in, and the unforgiving nature of drawing in permanent ink can make it challenging at times. With Daily Zoo Vol. 3, however, I've been experimenting with various pencils and colored pencils as seen in these six examples.
